Day Trip from Fes: Discover Meknes & Volubilis

Trade the busy streets of Fes for a full-day journey through some of northern Morocco’s most meaningful historical sites. This tour takes you to the heart of Morocco’s imperial past, ancient Roman presence, and spiritual traditions — all in one unforgettable experience.

Volubilis or Walili – Ruins of the Berber- Roman Empire

The day begins with a scenic drive through olive groves and rolling hills toward Volubilis, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997. Once the capital of the Berber kingdom of Mauretania in the 3rd century BC, Volubilis later became an important Roman outpost in North Africa. Today, the site offers a remarkable window into the past — from intact mosaic floors to crumbling columns and triumphal arches that have withstood nearly two thousand years. Wandering through this open-air archaeological site feels like stepping back in time. Entry to Volubilis is 100 MAD per person.

Meknes – The Understated Imperial Capital

In the afternoon, you’ll stop through Meknes, a city that was once a royal metropolis eclipsed by the fame of Marrakech and Fes, but that’s in fact charming and architecturally fascinating. Enormous gates, centuries-old granaries and tranquil courtyards reveal a city road-tested by the whims of Sultan Moulay Ismail. Spend time wandering the old medina, finding hidden mosques, or sipping on mint tea at an adjacent café before heading back to Fes.
