8 Day Tour from Casablanca to Marrakech via Fes, Merzouga and Dades Valley

The journey begins with a scenic drive inland toward Fes, often with a stop in Rabat to see Morocco's political capital and its old medina walls. As the road nears Fes, farmland and olive groves give way to the first glimpse of the city's ancient rooftops. Checking into a riad in the medina and enjoying a first dinner of Fassi cuisine, like pastilla or a slow-cooked lamb tagine, sets the tone for the days ahead.

Fes el Bali, one of the largest car-free medinas in the world, is best explored with a local guide. Highlights include the Chouara Tannery, the ancient Al-Qarawiyyin university, and the artisan workshops known for ceramics and metalwork. A sunset viewpoint over the rooftops from the Merenid Tombs is the perfect way to close out the day.

The road climbs through cedar forests near Ifrane and Azrou, where Barbary macaques are often spotted, before descending through the dramatic Ziz Valley oasis. By late afternoon, the journey reaches Merzouga, where a 4x4 or camel ride carries travelers into the Erg Chebbi dunes to watch the sunset before an overnight stay in a desert camp under the stars.

A sunrise hike over Erg Chebbi kicks off the day, followed by a stop in Khamlia to hear traditional Gnawa music. The route then continues to Ouzina, a quieter, less-visited stretch of dunes further southeast, where an afternoon visit with a local nomadic family offers a genuine look at life in the desert. A second night is spent camping among the Ouzina dunes.

The drive north passes through Rissani's historic trading square before entering the dramatic Todra Gorge, with its towering rock walls. Continuing into the Dades Valley, often called the Valley of a Thousand Kasbahs, the day ends with a sunset over the valley's famous Monkey Fingers rock formations from a kasbah-style hotel.

The route passes through Ouarzazate, Morocco's film capital, before reaching Ait Ben Haddou, a UNESCO-listed fortified kasbah. From there, the road climbs the dramatic Tizi n'Tichka pass through the High Atlas Mountains before descending into Marrakech, where a riad in the medina awaits.

A full day covers the Bahia Palace, the Saadian Tombs, and the winding souks of the medina. The Majorelle Garden offers a peaceful break before returning to Jemaa el-Fnaa in the evening, where food stalls, musicians, and storytellers bring the square to life.

A relaxed morning allows time for a final stroll through the medina before a private transfer to Marrakech Menara Airport brings the tour to a close.
