10 days tour from Fes to Marrakech

Day 01 :
Arrive in Fes and Discover the Ancient Medina

Your Morocco adventure begins the moment you land at Fes Airport. Your private driver will be waiting at arrivals to take you directly to your riad in the heart of the city. After a warm welcome and a glass of fresh mint tea, you step straight into one of the most extraordinary places on earth.

The Fes el Bali medina is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the world's largest car free urban area, an entire medieval city that feels completely frozen in time. Your local guide leads you through the winding lanes to the famous viewpoint overlooking the Chouara Tanneries, where workers have been dyeing leather in the same stone vats for over a thousand years. The colours are unlike anything you have seen before: saffron yellow, poppy red, and mint green spread across hundreds of circular stone pools.

From there you wander through the spice and craft souks, admire the intricate tilework of the Bou Inania Madrasa, and soak up the atmosphere of a city that has barely changed in five centuries. The evening ends over a slow traditional Moroccan dinner in the riad courtyard as Fes settles into its night rhythm.

Highlights: Fes Airport Pickup | Fes Medina (UNESCO) | Chouara Tanneries | Bou Inania Madrasa | Local Guide Included

Overnight: Riad or Hotel in Fes

Day 02 :
Fes to Merzouga and the Heart of the Sahara

Today is the big drive south and one of the great road journeys in Morocco. You leave Fes early and climb into the Middle Atlas Mountains, passing through the alpine town of Ifrane, a place so clean and European looking that it surprises almost every visitor. You continue through dense cedar forests where wild Barbary macaques live freely among the trees, and then descend through the dramatic Ziz Valley as the landscape slowly transforms from green mountains into dry ochre plains.

By late afternoon the flat horizon begins to shimmer. The first hints of orange dunes appear in the distance. You arrive in Merzouga at the foot of the Erg Chebbi, a sea of sand dunes that rise up to 150 metres from the desert floor. There is no gentle introduction. You go straight from the vehicle onto a camel and ride into the desert as the sun turns the sky red and gold behind you.

The desert camp appears like a mirage: traditional Berber tents lit with lanterns, the smell of tagine on the fire, and a sky filling with more stars than you have ever seen in your life. After dinner around the campfire your guides play traditional Gnawa music into the night. This is one of those evenings that you will talk about for years.

Highlights: Middle Atlas Mountains | Ziz Valley | Merzouga Dunes | Camel Trek at Sunset | Erg Chebbi Luxury Desert Camp | Berber Music under the Stars

Overnight: Luxury Desert Camp in Merzouga

Day 03 :
Sahara Sunrise, Explore Merzouga and Sleep in Ouzina

Wake up before dawn. Your guide leads you to the top of a high dune in the dark, and you sit in silence as the first thin line of orange light stretches across the horizon. The Sahara sunrise is one of those experiences that is genuinely hard to put into words. The stillness, the scale, the colours. Take your time. There is nowhere else you need to be.

After breakfast at the camp and a return to your hotel for a shower, you spend the morning exploring the Merzouga area. Visit the Gnawa village of Khamlia, where the local community performs powerful traditional music rooted in sub Saharan African culture. Stop at the Rissani souk if it falls on a market day (Tuesday, Thursday, or Sunday) and browse one of the most authentic traditional markets in the south of Morocco.

In the afternoon your driver takes you south to Ouzina, a remote desert oasis village that most tour operators simply do not include on their itineraries. This is real desert Morocco: date palms, mud brick architecture, nomadic families, and a silence so complete you can hear the wind moving over the sand. Sleeping here, far from the tourist trail, is one of the quiet highlights of this entire journey.

Highlights: Sahara Sunrise on the Dunes | Khamlia Gnawa Village | Optional Quad Biking | Rissani Market | Ouzina Desert Oasis

Overnight: Desert Guesthouse in Ouzina

Day 04 :
Rissani Market, Todra Gorge, Dades Valley and Ouarzazate

This is one of the most scenically rich days of the entire tour. You start the morning in Rissani, the ancient caravan city that was once the most important trading post between the Sahara and the rest of Morocco. The Rissani souk is a completely authentic local market where people come to trade livestock, dates, spices, and handmade goods. It is a world away from anything you will find in the big tourist cities.

From Rissani you drive west through the palm groves of Tinghir to the Todra Gorge, a narrow and breathtaking canyon where sheer red rock walls rise 300 metres straight up on either side of a cool running river. Walk along the gorge floor, feel the cool air rising off the water, and watch rock climbers tackle the vertical faces above you. It is Morocco's answer to the Grand Canyon and it never fails to impress.

After lunch near the gorge you continue west along the legendary Road of a Thousand Kasbahs, passing the Valley of Roses and the extraordinary rock formations of the Dades Valley before arriving in Ouarzazate, the so called Gateway to the Sahara and Morocco's film capital. Gladiator, Game of Thrones, and Lawrence of Arabia were all filmed in this region. A visit to the impressive Taourirt Kasbah rounds off an exceptional day before you settle in for the night.

Highlights: Rissani Souk | Todra Gorge (300m Cliffs) | Valley of Roses | Dades Valley Rock Formations | Ouarzazate Film City | Taourirt Kasbah

Overnight: Hotel in Ouarzazate

Day 05 :
Ouarzazate to Agadir via the Walled City of Taroudant

Today you leave the desert world behind and head southwest toward the Atlantic Ocean. The drive takes you through the rugged Anti Atlas Mountains on one of Morocco's most underrated scenic routes: red and brown hills, argan forest as far as you can see, and quiet Berber villages perched on the slopes. It is the kind of landscape that makes you want to stop every ten minutes just to look.

Midway through the journey you arrive in Taroudant, a beautiful and completely walled ancient city sitting in the fertile Souss Valley. Taroudant is often called the grandmother of Marrakech because it has all the atmosphere and charm of a great Moroccan medina but without the crowds. Walk along the imposing ochre coloured ramparts, explore the traditional Berber market, browse the jewellery and leather goods in the covered souks, and take a coffee break in the main square watching the world go by. Most travellers immediately wish they had planned to spend the night here.

After Taroudant it is a short drive north into Agadir. You arrive in the early evening and the air changes immediately: cool, salty, Atlantic. Check into your hotel, take a walk along the seafront promenade as the sun drops into the ocean, and enjoy a dinner of fresh grilled fish. After four days of desert and mountains, the sea feels like a reward.

Highlights: Anti Atlas Mountain Drive | Argan Forest | Taroudant Walled Medina | Souss Valley | Agadir Seafront at Sunset

Overnight: Hotel in Agadir

Day 06 :
A Free Day to Enjoy Agadir

Agadir is Morocco's most relaxed city and today belongs entirely to you. There is no schedule, no set programme, and no fixed departure time. Sleep in, have a long breakfast, and ease into the day.

If you want to be active, Agadir has one of the finest beaches in North Africa: ten kilometres of clean golden sand facing the Atlantic, perfect for swimming, sunbathing, or a morning run along the shore. The seafront promenade is great for cycling and the bay views are beautiful at every hour of the day.

If you prefer to explore, the Souk El Had is one of the largest covered traditional markets in Morocco, packed with local produce, fresh argan oil, spices, ceramics, leather goods, and clothing at prices far more honest than you will find in Marrakech or Fes. The hilltop ruins of the Agadir Oufella offer sweeping panoramic views over the entire bay and city, and the modern marina district has good restaurants and cafes for a relaxed evening meal.

Or simply do nothing at all. Sit by the pool, read a book, and rest your feet before the final days of the journey. This tour is yours and so is this day.

Highlights: Agadir Beach and Atlantic Swimming | Souk El Had | Agadir Oufella Viewpoint | Marina Restaurants | Full Free Day

Overnight: Hotel in Agadir

Day 07 :
Agadir to Essaouira, the Wind City of the Atlantic

This morning you drive north up the Atlantic coast to Essaouira, about two and a half hours through dramatic coastal scenery, small fishing villages, and the extraordinary argan forests that are found almost nowhere else on earth. Women from the Berber cooperatives still extract oil from argan nuts by hand along this route and you can stop to watch and buy directly from them.

Essaouira is unlike anywhere else in Morocco. It is a completely walled medina right on the Atlantic coast, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with whitewashed walls, blue painted shutters, and an atmosphere of creativity and calm that has drawn artists, musicians, and free spirits for generations. Jimi Hendrix visited in the 1960s. Cat Stevens passed through. The town became a setting for Game of Thrones. Something about the light, the wind, and the ocean air makes people want to stay.

You arrive in late morning with the full day ahead of you. Walk the sea ramparts where old cannons still point out over crashing Atlantic waves. Wander the medina lanes lined with art galleries, thuya wood workshops, and blue boats stacked along the harbour walls. Head to the fish souk for a long lunch of grilled sardines and fresh calamari, some of the best and most affordable seafood in all of Morocco. The afternoon is yours to wander, photograph, shop, or simply sit in a medina square and watch the world pass.

Highlights: Atlantic Coast Drive | Argan Cooperative Stop | Essaouira Medina (UNESCO) | Sea Ramparts and Cannons | Harbour Fish Market | Thuya Wood Workshops

Overnight: Riad or Hotel in Essaouira

Day 08 :
Free Morning in Essaouira, Then Arrive in Marrakech

There is no early start today. Essaouira in the morning, before the day visitors arrive from Marrakech, is a completely different city. The light is soft and golden, the streets are quiet, and the ramparts and beach belong almost entirely to you.

Take a slow walk along the long sandy beach south of the medina, where local fishermen mend their nets and kite surfers prepare their boards for the afternoon winds. Have a proper breakfast at a medina cafe, pick up any last hand crafted souvenirs from the wood carvers and silver jewellers, and take one final look at the Atlantic from the city walls.

After lunch, your driver collects you and you head east to Marrakech, about three hours through argan groves and the wide fertile plains of the Haouz region. You arrive in the early to mid afternoon with time to check in and begin exploring. Even if you have heard a great deal about Marrakech, the Djemaa el Fna square at dusk is still something else entirely. The storytellers, the acrobats, the smoke rising from the food stalls, the call to prayer echoing across the square. It is one of the great city spectacles in the world. Find a rooftop terrace, order a mint tea, and let the city come to you.

Highlights: Essaouira Morning at Leisure | Beach Walk | Drive to Marrakech | Djemaa el Fna at Dusk | Medina First Impressions

Overnight: Riad or Hotel in Marrakech

Day 09 :
A Full Day Exploring Marrakech, the Red City

Today is your day to really get under the skin of Marrakech. Your local guide takes you through the old medina, starting with the stunning Bahia Palace, a 19th century masterpiece of Moroccan craftsmanship with hand painted cedar ceilings, mosaic tiled courtyards, and intricate carved plasterwork at every turn. From there you visit the remains of the El Badi Palace and the Saadian Tombs, the beautifully preserved royal mausoleum that was hidden and forgotten for centuries before being rediscovered in 1917.

The afternoon takes you deep into the famous souks of Marrakech: the dyers souk where hanks of bright silk hang drying in the sun, the metalworkers alley ringing with the sound of hammered copper, the carpet market where every piece tells a different story. Your guide knows how to navigate all of it without pressure, giving you time to look, touch, and decide.

End the day at the Majorelle Garden, the famous botanical garden designed by French painter Jacques Majorelle and later saved by Yves Saint Laurent, a serene and beautifully curated space of cobalt blue buildings and exotic plants that feels like a quiet miracle in the middle of a busy city. The evening is yours: return to Djemaa el Fna for dinner from one of the food stalls, or find a rooftop restaurant in the medina for a final Moroccan feast.

Highlights: Bahia Palace | El Badi Palace | Saadian Tombs | Marrakech Souks with Guide | Majorelle Garden | Djemaa el Fna Dinner

Overnight: Riad or Hotel in Marrakech

Day 10 :
Departure from Marrakech Airport

Your last morning in Morocco. Depending on your flight time, you may have time for a slow breakfast at your riad, a final mint tea on the rooftop, or one last walk through the medina before the city fully wakes up. There is something bittersweet about Marrakech in the early morning: the light on the pink walls, the smell of fresh bread from the bakeries, the sound of swallows over the rooftops.

When you are ready, your private driver takes you to Marrakech Menara Airport in comfort and on time. The team at Sahara Adventure Tour wishes you safe travels and hopes to welcome you back to Morocco very soon.
