If you want to cross the beautiful dunes of the Sahara on a camel, sleep under the stars, or drink tea with the Berber people of Morocco, chances are you've been considering Morocco as a holiday for a long time. However, not all deserts in Morocco are the same.
Three of the most popular desert destinations are Merzouga, Zagora, and Agafay. Which one should you choose?
Let’s dig deeper.
Merzouga Desert: The Iconic Sahara Dream The Dream Sahara
When people picture the Sahara, they’re usually thinking of Merzouga. Located near the Algerian border, this is where the Erg Chebbi dunes rise up like rolling waves of golden sand—some reaching up to 150 meters high.
As locals who were born and raised in the Sahara Desert, we can honestly say: Merzouga is the real deal. It’s not just about the breathtaking landscapes—it’s the lifestyle, the silence of the dunes, the warmth of the people, and the rhythm of nomadic life that make it unforgettable.
If you're ready to fully experience the magic of the Sahara, we invite you to join us on a 5-day trip from Marrakech to Merzouga & Ouzina Desesrt—designed to let you live the authentic nomad experience with us.

Whether it’s your first desert adventure or you’re coming back for more, we’ll make sure it’s something you’ll remember for a lifetime.
Why you might go to Mérzouga:
- Inclination to feel the actual Sahara - This place is the "Instagram dream" desert, with dunes that seem never-ending.
- Stunning stargazing – Minimal light pollution means factory-like stars.
- Full Berber camps with music, food, and cultural opportunities.
Things to Keep in Mind:
- Better for longer trips – A desert trip is better if you have a little time (3, 4, 5 days).
- Mérzouga is stamped with authenticity if you want that full-immersion Sahara experience and don't mind a long drive to get there.
- Enjoy a true local experience by sharing a traditional meal with welcoming families in the heart of the Sahara Desert in Ouzina and Merzouga.
- Zagora Desert: The Little Sahara.
- Zagora is best referred to as the "little Sahara." Unlike Mérzouga, there are no enormous rolling dunes, but it is still in the desert! There are some flat rocky plains, with some smaller dunes scattered about.
Why you might go to Zagora:
- Comparable to the drive to the dunes. Closer by car – Approximately 6–7 hours driving from Marrakech.
- Suitable for quicker desert travel – if you only have time for a 2-day desert tour, this is suitable.
- Palm oases and kasbahs offer variety in the landscape and history.
Things You Might Want to Think About:
- Smaller dunes – There’s not the ocean of sand many expect.
- Less dramatic scenery – But still beautiful and tranquil.
- Zagora is perfect if you’re short on time but want a little taste of the desert experience.
Agafay Desert: The Sandless Desert
Only 40 minutes from Marrakech, Agafay is a rocky desert - not quite the Sahara, but beautiful and other-worldly all the same! Picture rolling stone hills, far-off mountains, and luxury desert camps.
Why Agafay?
- Easily Accessible - without long road trips.
- Unique scenery - more moon than sand
- Luxury - many luxury desert camps/retreats have pools, fine dining, and spa treatments.
- Great for photoshoots, events, quick getaways, etc.
- What to Consider:
- No dunes - so if you're really focused on riding camels over big dunes, this is probably not for you.
- Less "Sahara" feel - but still very peaceful and picturesque in an alternative way.
- Overall, Agafay is perfect for the short, stylish desert experience based in Marrakech.
